Masters Gala Reports 2016

Masters Block 3 Gala – 17th October 2016

It was in a quietly confident mood that some 25 members of the Masters Squad led by Chairman/Head Coach Anthony Philips headed to Salisbury on Saturday 1st October for the final County level Gala of the year. However, no one had any idea of just how successful an evening it was to be with the swimmers producing outstanding results. With 61 medals won, six county records broken and with resultant end of season results being Ladies third in the County, Men third in the County and the Club third in the County behind Salisbury and Swindon and this was out of fourteen Clubs, there was much to be very pleased about. Indeed if the Men had managed to score six more medals they would have overtaken Swindons Mens team. What a fantastic night and everyone is absolutely delighted. It places Warminster – a relatively small Club compared those in the big cities of the area – very firmly in the ‘big three’ Clubs at Masters level in Wiltshire.

Individual medal scores were: Stephanie Bremner six including two County records broken, Anthony Phillips six, Simon Mullinger six including three County records broken, Lloyd Short and Muriel Hitchcock five each, Beth Hargreaves four, Gary Bellfield, Julian Morgan, Ross Dewey, Judith Dando and Esther Levin three each, Club President Doug Winstone two including a County record, Rebecca Austin, Chris Darling, Stuart Bremner and Ian Parker two each with Sarah Jeffries, Martin Somervell and Stephen Hunt one each. Whilst Sarah Wardall, Paula Farrell, Kevin Hands, Guy Farrell, Paul Hosking and Toby Colin did not feature in the medals table they all swam very well in their highly competitive age groups. To cap it all the Club also won Bronze medals in the Mixed 4 x 25m Medley relay and the Mixed  6 x 25m freestyle Relay – the Head Cup. All in all an amazing evening. The Squad owes Anthony Phillips and the Coaching Team a great debt of gratitude for all they have done for us throughout the year. Undoubtedly the next thing on the agenda for the Squad is a good party to celebrate!

Masters Block 2 Gala – 4th June 2016

A strong team of eighteen swimmers took part in the second major County level Masters Gala at Trowbridge on 4th June. After some fairly comprehensive training Chairman/Head Coach Anthony Phillips was quite clear in wanting a good result and to his delight the team members did him proud.

With 47 medals won including in four relay races plus an overall result placing the Squad third out of thirteen Clubs in the County, members returned to Warminster tired but well pleased. Those winning individual medals were Beth Hargreaves four, three each by Rebecca Austin, Muriel Hitchcock, Anthony Phillips, Lloyd Short, Ross Dewey and Martin Somervell with Gary Bellfield and Julian Morgan winning two each. Following them with one each were Holly Barry, Sarah Jeffries, Stuart Bremner, Stephen Hunt and Guy Farrell. Whilst Paul Hosking, Kevin Hands and Bill Fryer did not feature in the overall medals list, they swam really well in their very competitive age groups.

The relay results were particularly pleasing and out of eleven relays entered the Squad won medals in the mixed 100m freestyle [gold for Gary Bellfield, Stuart Bremner, Rebecca Austin and Sarah Jeffries], the mixed 200m medley [bronze for Ross Dewey, Anthony Phillips, Beth Hargreaves and Holly Barry], ladies 100m medley [silver for Sarah Jeffries, Paula Farrell, Beth Hargreaves and Rebecca Austin] with the men completing the tally with a bronze in their 100m medley [Ross Dewey, Julian Morgan, Anthony Phillips and Stuart Bremner]. In summary it was a very successful evenings swimming and Chairman Anthony Phillips was delighted – as were the Squad members. The Squad will have to work very hard to maintain its form at the next County level Gala on 1st October.
