Masters Gala Reports 2015

Block 3 Gala – 3rd October 2015
Salisbury – Five Rivers

Twelve members of the Masters Squad travelled to Salisbury on Saturday 3rd October to take part in the third Wiltshire County Masters Gala of the year. Whilst mindful of the consistently high performance of the ladies in these Galas, Head Coach Anthony Phillips was very keen for the men to end the season having improved their position. With the Squad winning 36 medals including silver medals in two relay races and the men improving their overall position from 7th in 2014 to 3rd this year, he was not  disappointed!

Individual medal were won by Anthony Phillips [7] and by Chris Darling, Ross Dewy, Gary Bellfield and Esther Levin winning four each. Rebecca Austin, Kevin Hands and Doug Winstone won three each whist Holly-May Barry and Stephen hunt two each. Although Sarah Jeffries and martin Somervell did not feature in the medals table they enjoyed an excellent evening’s sport.

Overall the Club ended the season 5th out of15 Clubs in the County which is very satisfactory especially given that in terms of points we were only 20 points behind the Club holding second place which bodes well for next year.

Block 2 Gala – 6th June 2015
Trowbridge

Trowbridge was the location for the second Wiltshire County Masters Gala of the year – on Saturday 6th June and Head Coach Anthony Phillips told the 17 Swimmers competing that he really hoped, in particular, that the Club could really make some progress in winning medals in relays and with eight entered there were certainly some opportunities to do well.  With the Squad winning medals in five of the relays entered together with gaining 46 individual medals, he certainly was not disappointed.  Three – a silver and two bronze  medals – were won in freestyle relays [ladies, men’s and mixed] and two – a silver and a bronze – were won in medley relays. The Squad has not achieved this sort of result for a very long time.

Individual medals were won by Beth Hargreaves [4], Muriel Hitchcock [4], Anthony Phillips [4], Lloyd Short [3], Esther Levin [2], Gary Bellfield [2], Chris Darling [2] and Stewart Bremner [2] with one each by Jane Snedden, Sarah Jeffries and Doug Winstone. Whilst William Fryer, Kevin Hands, Jeremy Gask and Martin Somervell did not feature in the individual or relay medals tally, they had an excellent evenings swimming. All were very pleased at the conclusion of the Gala to find that the Club was placed 5th out of 15 Clubs in Wiltshire. Head Coach Anthony Phillips was indeed well satisfied!

Block 1 Gala – 21st February 2015
Swindon – Link Centre

With half-term in full swing, it was not surprising that only a smallish number [eleven] of the Masters Squad could get away to swim in the first Gala of the year at the Link Centre in Swindon. It was certainly a productive and very enjoyable evening’s sport.

With the swimmers winning fifteen medals and a county record being set by Jane Snedden, the journey over the Plain was well worth the effort. For once no medals were won in the four relay events entered but the experience gained from taking part is always very valuable.

In terms of individual results, Jane Snedden, Esther Levin and Muriel Hitchcock all won three medals each, Anthony Phillips and Doug Winstone two each and bot Gary Bellfield and Lloyd Short one. Although Paula Farrell, Kevin Hands, Stuart Bremner and Martin Somervell did not feature in the medals tally this time, they all had some really worthwhile swimming.

This has left the squad seventh in the County out of fourteen Clubs – a little down on the same stage last year. however, Chairman and Head Coach Anthony Phillips felt it had been a creditable performance to build on at the next Gala.
